Hillington Square

Location: Kings Lynn, Norfolk
Hillington Square was a typical 1960s council estate with issues of anti-social behaviour, lack of security and poor building conditions. Working in collaboration with Freebridge Community Housing and Hemingway Design the proposal extensively remodels and refurbishes more than 300 homes over 9 phases.
External interventions to the building fabric provided additional space to homes, which came in the form of new balconies, increased internal areas, new entrances and additional storage spaces. Selective demolition allowed connected blocks to be autonomous with their own identity and new and refurbished staircores improved accessibility. Ground floor garages were re-appropriated to house much needed bike, bin and leaseholder storage. New double glazed windows, insulation and updated building services maximised the buildings energy performance to minimise resident's heating bills.

Re-designing the main staircore created a more welcoming entrance to the block, whilst the high level lantern marks a key entrance point to Hillington Square
New windows and open balustrades were upgraded and existing brickwork and concrete cleaned
Ground floor dwellings were extended to improve space standards and elements of unifying colour were added to break down the length of the block
A complimentary palette of dark brickwork and coloured metalwork were chosen to contrast with the existing exposed concrete and red brickwork
